Through her estate, Catherine Hepler has donated $20,000 to Ball State University in memory of her son to create the Dr. Stephen Hepler Scholarship. Stephen Hepler received his bachelor of science in education from Ball State in 1965.
Hepler received a four-year scholarship to Ball State. While at the university, he played baseball, helped organize the euchre club and served as treasurer and lieutenant governor of Williams Hall in Noyer Complex. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a scholastic honorary, and Sigma Zeta, the national science honorary. He was on the dean's list and was a junior marshal for Commencement ceremonies.
Hepler received a master of science in 1971 and a doctorate in computer science in 1973 from Ohio State University. He became an associate professor of computer science at Wayne State University in Detroit.
In September 1977, Hepler was robbed in the parking lot of Wayne State. He was stabbed and left to die on the sidewalk. Hepler's friends created a scholarship at Wayne State in his memory and his mother, who recently passed away, also donated a memorial scholarship to Ohio State University.
The Dr. Stephen Hepler Scholarship at Ball State is for incoming freshmen, sophomores, juniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in computer science. Recipients must be Indiana residents. The selection will be based on prior academic accomplishments.
