Ball State's student-run newspaper, the Daily News, placed third in two categories in the U.S.News & World Report "Best College Newspapers of 2006" online competition.

The campus newspaper's podcast received 12 percent of the votes cast online for the "Best Alternative Media Outlet" category. The podcast is a daily audio update that delivers a newscast via iTunes and MP3 on bsudailynews.com.

Editor in chief David Studinski, a senior from Fort Wayne, also placed third with 7 percent of the online votes cast for "Bewildered Society," which was entered in the "Best College Paper Columnist" category.

The Daily News staff was proud to be nominated and pleased with the rankings, Studinski said.

"Regardless of placings, it's an honor to be recognized at a national level by such a respected organization as U.S.News and World Report," Studinski said.

The contest was the first for U.S.News and World Reports' "Paper Trail," an online blog about college news and the media that covers it.
