Description: Charles Dickens and Christmas have been inextricably linked in the popular imagination since the publication of “A Christmas Carol” in 1843. This talk explores the circumstances under which Dickens wrote the novella, the place it occupies in its author’s career, and the impact it made from the beginning in promoting benevolence and charity. Adapted for stage, radio and screen, nearly two centuries later it retains its power to move and inspire.
Presenter Bio: Steven Turpin was the producer and host of Indiana Public Radio’s “Morning Musicale” from 1988 until his retirement in 2001. A native of Iowa, he graduated from Central College then earned a master’s degree in musicology at The University of Texas at Austin. He has been a devoted enthusiast of the works of Charles Dickens for more than fifty years. In 2000 he founded and led The Dickens Collective, a group dedicated to reading all of Dickens’s novels over a four-year period. “A Christmas Carol” remains a particular favorite of his.
