Kate Elliott
Associate Lecturer in School of Journalism and Strategic Communication
About Kate Elliott
Kate H. Elliott is a lecturer and coordinates the School of Journalism and Strategic Communication's Magazine Media concentration. She chairs the College of Communication, Information, and Media (CCIM) Engagement Task Force and serves on several university committees and initiatives. From 2018-2020, Elliott supported Ball State's historic partnership with Muncie Community Schools (MCS) as faculty fellow to the provost. Alongside teachers, administrators, and community partners, Elliott is working to realize a holistic educational system that nurtures student success and community wellbeing. She continues to serve MCS as a member of the MCS-Ball State Academic Innovation Council.
In the classroom, Elliott is driven to outfit the next generation of storytellers and strategists with the confidence, expertise and connections to lead competitive, in-demand fields. She regularly teaches JOUR 101: Media & Society, a core course- open to any major- that dives into media literacy and the range of rewarding careers in journalism, public relations, advertising and visual storytelling. She also teaches all of the courses within the Magazine Media concentration, which equips students with the expertise and connections to excel at storytelling for news outlets, nonprofits and companies.
Facilitation of several immersive learning experiences reflect Elliott's commitment to community-focused storytelling. In fall 2017, she guided a team of student journalists to profile farmers, nonprofit leaders, residents in food deserts, and more as part of a storytelling movement to share the challenges and opportunities within Muncie's food system. In spring 2016, she worked with marketing, public relations, and journalism graphics majors to advance the reach and reputation of ecoREHAB, a Muncie nonprofit that transforms abandoned properties into energy-efficient homes for residents in need. She also guided an immersive project to celebrate the Department of Journalism's 50th Anniversary and BSU's Centennial in 2019.
