Students collaborate at a table in a Ball State classroom discussing coursework with a peer

The Ball State STEM Academy's goal is to address a teacher shortage in Indiana in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The academy offers two programs: one for STEM professionals planning to transition to teaching, and one for already-licensed Indiana STEM teachers who wish to become either dual-credit certified or a mathematics specialist.

Current Teachers

The STEM Academy Teachers Program allows you to take courses that enable you to teach dual-credit STEM classes in Indiana high schools or take courses leading to the Indiana Elementary Mathematics Specialist license. Individuals in the program receive a $1,500 stipend for each course taken (must earn a grade of B- or better), up to six courses total.

Fellows Program

The STEM Academy Fellows Program is for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field who aspire to be Indiana secondary STEM teachers. This program provides $10,000 stipends to complete the online, 18-credit-hour Transition to Teaching Program for Secondary Education, which leads to licensure. Fellows must earn a grade of B- or better in each course and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA overall.

To be eligible for this program, you must:

  • have a bachelor’s degree in a STEM content area
  • commit to teach a secondary STEM subject in an Indiana K-12 public school

Application due dates for the Transition to Teaching Program for Secondary Education vary, please reach out to program contacts for further details.

Licensing Requirements
