Biology Concentrations
As a general biology student, you will complete the same core courses as students pursuing a concentration, but you will also have the flexibility of customizing the remainder of your major with the help of your biology advisor.
The Aquatic Biology and Fisheries concentration prepares students to study, manage, and protect freshwater ecosystems such as lakes, rivers, and streams. Students gain hands-on experience applying biological science to real-world challenges including water quality, habitat restoration, fisheries management, and invasive species control.
The Cellular and Molecular Biology concentration allows you to explore and research fundamental molecular pathways that control important cellular processes. You will utilize a variety of model systems including those based on animal, plant, fungal, and bacterial cells. Additionally, through completion of this concentration, you will be prepared for advanced graduate studies, attaining professional degrees, or working in biotech and pharmaceutical industries.
As a field botany student, you will study plants as well as fungi and algae to gain a strong understanding of the field. You will receive training in the biology and conservation of native and regional flora. In addition to traditional classroom experiences, you will also find many opportunities for practical experiences through participation in faculty-directed research, internships, or career-related summer employment. Your degree will open the door to a number of careers including agricultural jobs and graduate programs.
Forensic Biology educates students in innovative methods and approaches to collect and analyze crime scene evidence. Students graduating with this concentration solve crimes using modern cellular and molecular biology tools necessary for the analysis of forensic DNA and other biological evidence.
As a Genetics Concentration student, you’ll dive into cutting-edge topics like developments in human genetics, molecular biology, biometry, genomics & bioinformatics. You’ll also have access to specialty courses and hands-on lab experiences tailored to a variety of interests. These could include decoding DNA for health innovations, applying genetic science in forensic investigations, using genomics to protect biodiversity, or preparing for a career in genetic counseling.
As a microbiology student at Ball State, you will study bacteria, archaea, viruses, fungi, algae, and other microbes in classroom and laboratory settings. You will have ample opportunities to perform guided research with faculty members and present data in local, regional, and national conferences. You will also have opportunities to take an active role in writing and submitting your own trailblazing research for publication and managing others’ research manuscripts for a microbiology journal, Fine Focus.
The wildlife biology and conservation concentration places an emphasis on wild animals, plant and tree life, and the management of the habitats in which they live. Through courses in subjects like forestry, plant classification, wildlife biology, ecology, ornithology, and mammalogy, you will be prepared to pursue a career in wildlife conservation with governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations or private consulting firms. This wildlife conservation degree concentration also serves as an excellent prerequisite to study any of these subjects at a deeper level in graduate school.
The Zoology concentration focuses on the study of animals and prepares students to understand animal diversity, behavior, physiology, and ecology across a wide range of environments. Students gain a strong foundation in animal biology while tailoring their coursework to match their specific interests and career goals.
