Glass at Ball State is offered as an area of focus within the BFA in Studio Art, allowing students to explore glass as a primary material while developing a broad foundation in studio art. Students who choose to concentrate in glass gain a diverse understanding of the material and its techniques, supported by a curriculum that emphasizes both technical skill and conceptual development. Faculty encourage exploration of glass within contemporary craft, design, and sculpture, and foster experimental material research—particularly through cross-media approaches and interdisciplinary practice.

Students focusing on glass can expect to:

  • Explore various glass processes including: hot glass blowing, flameworking, kiln forming, neon, coldworking, and more.
  • Understand the historical and contemporary canon of glass, both for sculpture and design.
  • Contextualize their work for an audience in oral, written, and digital formats.
  • Develop a strong understanding of professional modes of presentation.
  • Produce a cohesive body of work that showcases their own unique artistic perspective.
