The Writing Center is staffed by hourly undergraduate and graduate tutors and students with graduate assistantships through the Department of English. We hire hourly tutors once or twice a year; we post openings on Cardinal Career Link when we are hiring. We currently do not have graduate assistantships open to students from other departments. If we aren't currently hiring, you can email us at writing@bsu.edu to express your interest, and we will add your name to a list of potential tutors. Then, when we open applications again, we will let you know so you can apply.

Assistant Directors are selected by an application process each spring semester for the following academic year. English Department graduate assistants are eligible to apply; preference is given to doctoral students in Rhetoric and Composition and to those pursuing careers in writing center administration.

We aim to employ a team that reflects the diversity of the Ball State community. Students from any major or program are encouraged to apply. Tutors must have both good writing skills and good people skills.

Undergraduates who are interested in writing center work might consider taking ENG 389, a writing center course, to learn about writing center pedagogy and get experience in the Writing Center.

Graduate students from any program can take ENG 689, a graduate course on writing center theory and administration, to learn more about writing center pedagogy, research, and leadership.
