The learning module seeks to raise K-12 student perception of P3 relationships. Immersive learning in the module teaches kids that buildings can be made of home-grown materials that use less energy in harvesting, processing and delivery. Kids “learn through doing” that building with local materials allows the building to be part of a process that supports nature, the local farmer, and the community.
They also learn that hay, like other local waste materials, is available at low cost. They learn that building with straw makes the building cool in the summer and warm in the winter, that these buildings use less energy and save money on electricity; and that they can be built by their friends rather than outsiders. They learn that buildings made from natural and waste materials can stand up well in fires and earthquakes, and that they are often easier to change over time.
Phase I designed the learning module to provide immersive learning experiences for kids, and to connect kids (wireless connection to field site, environmental education center, and web) to web-based games and other learning resources. The module also connects kids, through the site wireless network to the global network of P3 learning environments including those available through Ball State’s participation as a Globe International site.
The module was also designed for it research opportunities to develop learning games and other tools using the learning module. The weekly schedule for the learning module includes times for organized school trips to the module as immersive learning experiences; as well as time for research that includes immersive learning activities and development of learning games for kids.
