Project Summary
This project was the physical transfer
and repatriation of human remains and possible associated funerary objects from
Tolu, Crittenden County, KY that were in the possession of Ball State
University’s Department of Anthropology.
Physical transfer and repatriation took place on October 6, 2014. This was a joint repatriation with four
tribes with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians taking the lead. Other tribes consulted and agreeing to this
repatriation were the Cherokee Nation, United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee
Indians in Oklahoma and the Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma. These Tolu, KY materials were listed in the
NAGPRA Culturally Unidentifiable Native American Inventory Database as ID:
Accession #75F (Last Updated 01-02-05). The collection that was repatriated consisted
of human remains representing at least three individuals and 392 possible
associated funerary objects.
