The Carnegie Classifications are the nation's leading framework for describing colleges and universities. They help show what an institution does, whom it serves, and how its work creates impact.
Opportunity College and University
This designation recognizes institutions that serve student populations reflective of their regions and deliver strong outcomes. Ball State is a national model for access, economic mobility, and opportunity.
Research 2: High Research Activity
R2 recognizes universities with high levels of research activity and graduate education. At Ball State, faculty and students work together to discover new knowledge, strengthen teaching, and improve lives.
Community Engagement
This classification honors a deep, sustained commitment to reciprocal partnerships. Ball State students, faculty, and staff collaborate with communities to address critical needs, enhance student learning, and create lasting impact.
