Psychological Science
Master’s Degrees in Psychology
Programs in clinical psychology and cognitive psychology - social psychology

We offer two master of arts level programs:

  • Clinical Psychology
The Clinical Psychology Master's program provides training consistent with the scientist-practioner model and includes a foundation in abnormal psychology, psychotherapy, and assessment. Students complete a 400-hour internship during their second year.
  • Cognitive and Social Processes
This program provides extensive training in cognitive psychology, social psychology, statistics, and research methods. Students are strongly encouraged to complete a thesis or other independent research project.

Our primary mission is to prepare students for doctoral study by offering quality instruction in the science of psychology and opportunities to conduct psychological research. Students can collaborate with faculty whose research interests include stereotyping and prejudice, cross-cultural issues and diversity, juror decision making, eyewitness memory, gender issues, text processing, emotion, sexuality, health, and interpersonal communication. Since 2004, 89% of our graduates who applied to doctoral programs were admitted.

Most of our students have graduate assistantships: 40%-50% have assistantships through the Dept. of Psychological Science, and others have assistantships in various campus offices outside the department.  Historically, more than 90% of our students who wanted an assistantship were able to obtain one.

We do not require a psychology undergraduate degree but prefer that you have taken courses in undergraduate statistics and research methods. If you haven't, you'll need to take extra courses prior to the required courses. (Click on one of the programs above for details.)

Prospective students can visit the Graduate School's page for information about housing, the community and more.
