Michael Gibson, research fellow for Ball State's Institute for Digital Fabrication, recently led a group of students in the creation of a new building prototype through a partnership with New Castle-based Ferrell & Barker, an architectural design and construction management firm.
The project explored the relationship between computer-based design and prefab construction, a key Indiana industry. The prototype created by Gibson and his students uses less wood and lets in more light.
Ferrell & Barker donated lumber and its manufacturing facility to allow for construction of the prototype. Gibson said this project could lead to future partnerships with Ferrell & Barker and/or other Indiana prefab construction companies.
