Presentation on “Trauma of Political Prisoners in South Africa”
The presentation given by Ashraf Kagee, Ph.D., addressed the issue of traumatization of political prisoners in South Africa. Dr. Kagee is a professor of Psychology at Stellenbosh University in South Africa. As a result of research Kagee conducted on former political prisoners, he presented an argument in his lecture that the terms "Trauma" and "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder" may be applicable to some of the experiences of South African former political prisoners who were abused and tortured during detention. His research indicated that other issues, like poverty and unemployment were equally important in the consideration of positive interventions to help this social group. MORE...
