Admissions: Undergraduate Applicant Portfolios

Students are not required to submit a portfolio when applying for admission to the College of Architecture and Planning, but it is highly recommended. The portfolio is a collection of items exhibiting your work, achievements, talents, and interests. It is a way to show the CAP admissions committee your potential in pursing an education within the college.

The best portfolios are diverse in content and focus more on your creative talents than technical abilities. Portfolios can include but are not limited to the following:

  • Personal or academic work
  • Examples of writing
  • Awards or certificates
  • Creative work such as newspaper articles, drawings, paintings, photography, photos of pottery or sculpture, photos of gardening or landscaping, crafts, etc.

Submitted portfolios must meet the following requirements:

  • Use letter-size, 8.5 x 11-inch paper only.
  • Maximum length is 12 sheets (24 pages if the front and back of each sheet is used).
  • Your first and last name must be on the top right-hand corner of each page.
  • Paper should be stapled in the top left-hand corner.
  • Please do not use notebook binders.
  • Please do not include any disks or CDs; submit printed material only (the portfolio is included in your application file in the college office and must fit into the file system).

CAP reserves the right to refuse any portfolio that does not meet these requirements. Please note: Portfolios cannot be returned.
