Community Outreach

National leadership in community design and public service has long been a hallmark of Ball State University's College of Architecture and Planning. From inner-city neighborhoods to rural towns, communities across Indiana and the nation have enhanced their quality of life with help from CAP-led design and planning projects.

Students and faculty work with local public and private partners to develop sustainable solutions to issues such as affordable housing, urban and suburban growth, economic revitalization, transportation, land use, historic preservation, and energy efficiency.

These projects take the form of community design workshops called "charrettes," field studio assignments, applied research, and technical assistance. Many provide hands-on learning experiences for CAP students while fostering public awareness and participation.

Many of these projects are organized by CAP's national award-winning Community-Based Projects program and Muncie Urban Design Studio, plus the college's new Indianapolis Center.
