Working with Others with Different Backgrounds () Sponsor: Learning and Development
Prerequisite:   None
During this session you will learn techniques to perceive the needs, concerns, and problems of others. Working with others with different backgrounds and perspectives offers great opportunities and occasional challenges. Our work lives would be dull and our work product mediocre if we did not have the opportunity to engage with others who offered different viewpoints and ideas than our own. Yet, at times, our differences in communication styles, personalities, values and work preferences can lead to misunderstandings and clashes that make us wonder if we are better off working alone. In this workshop, we will explore ways to maximize opportunities and effectively respond to the challenges inherent in working with and through differences. At as a result of participating in this workshop, participants will be able to: • Articulate some of the key cultural, identity and work style differences that impact their working relationships • Develop increased competency to work with others with different backgrounds and to overcome filters and barriers that may impact their ability to do so • Engage in a dialogue process for working through challenges that are the result of significant differences, particularly regarding issues that truly matter for which there is high emotion and strong disagreement
