About the 2024 Solar Eclipse

On Monday, April 8, 2024, Muncie, Indiana, will be given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity when the path of the total solar eclipse passes over our community. This is the first total solar eclipse to visit Muncie since 957CE! For about 3 minutes and 40 seconds, Ball State University will be plunged into deep twilight as the Moon hides the Sun from our sky.

Ball State University is collaborating with NASA to provide views of today’s total solar eclipse using telescopes from the Charles W. Brown Planetarium. Watch from Ball State telescope.

What is a Solar Eclipse?

An eclipse happens when one object in space gets in the way of another and blocks it from view. During a solar eclipse, the Moon gets in the way of the Sun and blocks it out for select viewers on Earth. This can look different depending on the type of solar eclipse.
