David Letterman will give the university memorabilia from his singular career in television, including props and sets from his time hosting “Late Night” and “Late Show.”
David Letterman, one of Ball State’s most celebrated graduates, will give the university memorabilia from his singular career in television, including props and sets from his time hosting “Late Night” and “Late Show.”
The announcement of the gift of The David Letterman Experience collection was made during the Dave at Ball State event Monday at Emens Auditorium, featuring filmmakers Bennett Miller and Spike Jonze.
“As a continuing chapter in celebrating Dave’s legacy and contributions to Ball State, I am honored and pleased that Dave has donated his collection of ‘Late Show’ honors and memorabilia, including all of his Emmys and components of the ‘Late Show’ set, to Ball State," said President Paul W. Ferguson.
"This collection will become part of The David Letterman Experience to be housed in the Letterman Building, extending a legacy of excellence, learning and preparation for our students into the 21st century.”
Letterman acknowledged the gift with his signature humor and revealed yet again the love he has for Ball State.
“I’m so lucky to have been invited back. I want to thank everybody here, everybody on campus and the people who run this university,” Letterman said. “It’s an honor to maintain this association, so thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.”
The news of the gift drew great cheers from the full house of mostly students, who value what Letterman means to Ball State.
“He gives so much back to our program,” said Kaitlyn Young, a sophomore from Evansville who camped out to be sure to get tickets to the event. “I came to Ball State just because of the telecommunications program and started working right away. That’s because of everything he has done for this university.”
