Audiences of all ages will enjoy a lavish combination of dance as Ball State University's dancers and choreographers put a twist on the age-old classic story, "The Nutcracker." The production will kick off the holiday season at the University Theatre stage at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3-6 and 11-13, with a matinee performance at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 7.
"We premiered ‘The Nutcracker’ four years ago, and it was a big hit at the university, as well as in the community,” said Audra Sokol, director of Ball State's dance program and associate professor of dance. “We chose to perform ‘The Nutcracker’ again this year because everyone loves a good ‘Nutcracker’ during the holiday season, and we wanted to be a part of that tradition.”
"One aspect that makes our production of ‘The Nutcracker’ different from others is the use of several different pieces of choreography and types of dance,” Sokol said. “The six choreographers created sections of the show and choreographed in their own personal style, so one can expect to see a variety of dance styles, including ballet, jazz, tap, modern, and ethnic dance. It is great for our students to experience a full-length ballet, rather than a concert, with several different pieces of choreography.”
Tickets for "The Nutcracker" cost $18 for the general public, $17 for faculty and staff, $15 for senior citizens and $13 for students. They are available from the University Theatre Box Office, open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour before each performance. Contact the box office at 765-285-8749 or visit bsu.edu/theatre for more information.
