The Ball State Board of Trustees today approved a new master of science degree in software engineering (MSSE), offered through the Department of Computer Science in the College of Sciences and Humanities.
“Indiana has a growing industry of software-intensive businesses, especially in the Greater Indianapolis area,” said President Jo Ann M. Gora. “These burgeoning companies need a steady supply of employees who are well-prepared to lead in these high-paying jobs. This degree program fills an important need for students as well as the state."
The U.S. Department of Labor lists the median pay for software engineers at $90,530, with an anticipated growth rate of 30 percent over the next decade, said Provost Terry King. While entry-level positions in this field require a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree is preferred for leadership roles.
“Ball State has a strong tradition of excellence in computer science education, application and research,” King said. “The Department of Computer Science is endeavoring to fill a growing need by creating a new master of science degree in software engineering. It is aimed at preparing students to take on leadership roles in the development and implementation of computer and information systems and prepare them for careers as software engineers and software managers in industry and government agencies.”
King noted that only one other Indiana institution offers an MSSE program. Two additional faculty and related graduate assistants are anticipated to fill new curricular needs brought about by the program. No new facilities will be required.
