Ball State was named among six universities committed to social justice in the December 2009 issue of Architect Magazine. This is the first time the magazine has published this recognition.

The College of Architecture and Planning (CAP) is well-known for working with communities in need, said Guillermo Vasquez de Velasco, CAP dean.

"Our approach is holistic and multidisciplinary. We understand that the built environment can be at the same time a generator and a manifestation of social justice," he said. "Neglected environments can be incubators of social inequality."

Vasquez de Velasco said the college teaches that the built environment results from the work of architects, landscape architects, city planners and urban designers, and their collective reference to society.

The magazine also recognized Auburn University, Mississippi State University, Tulane University, University of California Berkley and University of Detroit Mercy.
