The estate of a Ball State University alumna has donated more than $185,000 to create a fund for the G. Ann Uhlir Scholarship in Physical Education.
The late Gladys Ann Uhlir graduated from Ball State in 1955 with a bachelor's degree in health and physical education.
The scholarship fund was created to recruit outstanding students who plan to major in physical education or kinesiology to Ball State.
Uhlir earned her master's and doctoral degrees from Columbia University in New York. She served as an educator at three universities and a women's rights activist as executive director of the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.
Uhlir founded the Center for Research on Women's Health at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas. She established the first distance learning program there and retired in 1996.
Uhlir fought breast cancer for eight years. She died Nov. 28, 2007, at the age of 73.
The scholarship is for undergraduate female students majoring in physical education and is renewable for three years. Students receive $500 per academic year. Applicants must be incoming freshmen or transfer students with a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
