David Taylor, assistant director of the Multicultural Center, received the Governor's Award for Tomorrow's Leaders.

Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman, on behalf of Gov. Mitch Daniels, presented the prestigious, statewide award to Taylor Sept 5 at the Humanities Council's Indiana Leadership Retreat in Indianapolis. The award recognizes and honors a diverse group of outstanding young leaders.

The recipients are chosen from a group of nominees who are Indiana residents between the ages of 19 and 29 and exhibit leadership and achievement in the community as well as the entrepreneurial, educational and cultural fields.

Taylor said he was gratified to receive the award because "it gives me a chance to be an African-American role model in the Muncie and Ball State community."

"Winning this award is very humbling because I had to work very hard to get where I am," he added. "Nothing was handed to me, so it allows me to bring things into perspective. I'm very honored by the state, and this makes me want to go further in my personal accomplishments."

Taylor received $1,000, which he donated to the Kingdom Embassy Inc., a nonprofit, faith-based organization that focuses on living a healthy life through personal wellness. The charity was co-founded by Taylor in March 2007.

Taylor is an aspiring author with more than 30 book ideas, one of which was accepted for publication by Strang Communications, the nation's leading Christian publisher. He is active in the community and volunteers to help students and adults achieve their fullest potential.

Taylor participates in mentoring programs throughout the community and also works with youth ministries.

"My work is to help educate younger individuals and to stimulate the value of education and their self worth," Taylor said.

Taylor attended Ball State and received his bachelor's degree in psychology and master's degree in clinical psychology. He is completing his doctorate in clinical Christian counseling at Cornerstone University. This is his second year working for the Multicultural Center.
