Helping students achieve academic success and personal growth through safe, comfortable, affordable, and diverse living and learning communities is our mission. We believe that living in the residence halls and eating at dining locations offering numerous choices is a good value, especially when you take into account all of the services automatically included in the room and board rates. These services range from computer labs and free Internet access, fitness rooms, a safe and secure environment, and much more.

For the Fall 2020 semester, we will adjust the housing and dining contracts for our students. Consistent with the academic calendar for the Fall semester, students will only be billed for 13 weeks, as opposed to the usual 16-week contract rate. As a result of this appropriate accommodation to our students, they and their families will save approximately $5.5 million next Fall. Spring rates will remain the same.

Fall 2020 Rates

Types of Plans and Contracts

The Standard Plan is a one-year commitment to living in the residence halls. At the end of that year, students have the option to sign another standard (or premium plan) contract.

  • Rates are for both fall and spring semesters and include a meal plan.
  • There is a Residence Hall Technology Fee of $60 per semester.
  • Single and Triple Rooms are available for returning students only.
  • All rates include a $7 per semester activity fee.

How would you like a great way to save money, keep college expenses down, and increase the value of your on-campus living experience?

By signing up for the Premium Plan, your housing and dining fees are frozen for two years. This offer helps you avoid the increases that normally occur for the second year. And based upon availability, if you want to request a room upgrade for year two of the contract, you will be able to do so at the first year's rates.

Ultimately, students who sign up for premium plans save an average of $800 over the two years.

Lots of Perks

The Premium Plan also provides additional benefits just for you:

  • Free Food – Upon enrolling in the plan, you receive an additional $50 in your Dining Plus account each semester. If you sign up for the 21-Meal Plan, that means you will receive $50 Dining Plus per semester too. That is a $200 value for the two-year contract!
  • Early Move-In – Members of the Premium Plan may move into the residence halls a day early for the fall semesters. This can help you avoid long lines that are sometimes associated with the regular opening day.
  • Priority Room Sign-Up – Plan members have the option of priority residence hall room sign-up for the second year. Several residence halls are very popular places for students to call home and often are filled early by returning students. For the second year of the plan, Premium Plan members may choose to select available spaces before they are offered to students in their priority date group who are not participating. (This is based upon your housing deposit date.)
  • Option of a Free Stadium Parking Permit (limited quantity available on a first come, first serve basis) OR an Additional $80 Dining Plus added to your fall meal plan

Plan Cost

Absolutely nothing extra! There are no additional contract charges for these services and benefits. We want to provide students with the opportunity to maximize their on-campus housing and dining value.

How to Sign Up

Choose the Premium Plan option when submitting your housing and dining contract.

By selecting and submitting your wish to be part of the Premium Plan, you extend the term of your housing and dining contract for the 2018-19 and the 2019-20 academic years.

Exclamation IconImportant

Summer semesters are not included in the plan. Also, the Premium Plan is a continuous two-year contract and cannot be extended if a student leaves for an academic program, such as student teaching or study abroad.

The Premium Plan will continue to be available to individuals living in the residence halls for the 2019-20 academic year. Special cancellation charges are outlined in Section 7 of the Ball State Housing Contract.

By increasing the number of people living on campus, we are able to pass this savings on to Premium Plan members. Please remember that when you sign the Premium Plan contract, you will be expected to fulfill the terms of the contract. Please review your housing and dining contract for terms and conditions.

Because Ball State's room and board contract is considered a legal, binding document, students are strongly encouraged to review the contract prior to signing. Students will sign an electronic contract when first agreeing to live on campus. This contract will be updated during the online room sign up period when students agree to the terms and conditions electronically.

Review the contract terms and conditions for the term you are planning to live on campus.

How We Set Rates

Each year, a committee of staff members representing the university's Business Affairs and Student Affairs and Enrollment Services divisions meets to create a proposal for residence hall room and board rates for the coming academic year. The proposal is based on anticipated operating expenses, facility maintenance expenses, student programming needs, and other costs. The suggested rate is then proposed to the Ball State Board of Trustees for review and final approval. Room and board rates are the same for residents of Indiana and from other state.

Housing and Residence Life and Ball State Dining are self-sustaining units and are expected to generate all revenue for both operational and capital improvement expenditures. They receive no taxpayer support. As stated in the Housing and Residence Life Mission Statement and the Dining Value Statement, both areas make every effort to operate in as cost-effective a manner as possible and work very hard to keep any annual rate increase to the lowest possible amount so room and board remains accessible to all students.

Occupancy Calendar

Residence Halls will close during the following break periods for the 2020-2021 academic year:

2020 Hall Closing

Halls Close: 10:00 a.m. - Wednesday, November 25, 2020

The remainder of the housing open and closing dates will be posted once the university confirms the academic calendar for Spring 2021.

Residence Halls are not open during designated break periods (Thanksgiving Break, Semester Break, and Spring Break). Individual students needing housing during that time may request space in a hall designated by Housing and Residence Life (HRL) through our office, and is dependent upon availability. There is no guarantee of housing during these time periods. Official university teams or groups needing space should make the request through the Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life who handles conference bookings. Space will only be available in halls that are staffed by HRL personnel, and any additional costs beyond the break rate will be incurred by the group/team requesting housing. Requests must be made at least three weeks prior to the break period in order for HRL to ready space and secure staffing. Two weeks prior to the break, the requesting office must provide a list of names of current residents who will be housed and provide a financial guarantee. Meal plans are not active during break periods.

Meal plans are not provided during break periods.

If break period housing is chosen, the charge will be for the entire break, not on a per night basis. Individuals and groups agree to the break period rate. Reservations for break period housing will not be accepted for students with delinquent housing accounts or significant disciplinary incidents. Guests are not permitted during these times.
