“Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things.” –Tobler’s First Law of Geography. Maps can be informative, compelling, and revealing and are found in almost every discipline and field. This workshop will discuss the essential elements of mapping and spatial visualization in digital scholarship. We will introduce fundamental principles, discuss the role of the digital in mapping projects, and critique real-world examples. Additionally, we will outline multiple platforms for spatial visualization and analysis available at Ball State University.

In today's academic landscape, where outreach and community engagement are essential, integrating these elements into academic programs is crucial. At Ball State University's School of Art, Shantanu Suman established Studio 165+, a graphic design course that collaborates with Muncie communities, and Muncie Action Plan, and Building Better Neighborhoods to create visual identities and promotional materials. Through research-driven design projects, including work on Muncie's American Rescue Plan funding program, students gain hands-on experience applying theory to practice while developing civic and leadership skills. In this Lunch and Learn session, Shantanu will share insights from managing this ongoing, collaborative campaign.
