Mark Lucas PhotoPhysics Colloquium: Reaching Out to Make Physics (and STEM) Phun – Physics and Astronomy Public Outreach at Ohio University by Professor Mark Lucas, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Ohio University. Abstract: The physical world is amazing. It is easy for us to focus in on our research work of Physics and Astronomy as we personally try to understand the world around us better. For a wide variety of reasons, it is good to take some time every once in a while to get out and help the public understand a little bit better what we do. This outreach can take a lot of different forms: public talks, working with K-12 students in a variety of situations, workshops and camps, family STEM events…. Throughout my 20 years at Ohio University, I’ve had the opportunity and support from the Department of Physics and Astronomy to explore a wide range of public outreach opportunities. In this talk I will discuss some of my adventures in outreach and lessons learned along the way.
