Come learn about music composition, the art and skill of creating music. This event will be led by Ball State composition faculty with opportunities to meet current composition students. The day will also include an introduction to Ball State’s music composition degree and course offerings.


10 to 11:30 a.m. Visit to our electronic music/recording studios and a composition activity using electronic sounds in our studios.

11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Lunch and informal discussion with our composition faculty (box lunch provided, including vegetarian options)

1 to 3 p.m. Reading of submitted pieces by the Ball State New Music Ensemble.* Following the readings of pieces, students can have a mini lesson on their piece with a composition faculty member.

* Those wishing to participate in the reading must follow the guidelines.

Composition Guidelines

Guidelines for those wishing to have a piece read by the New Music Ensemble:

  1. The score and parts must be submitted (arrival) by November 7. They can be e-mailed as PDFs to Amy Kaplan, or hard copies can be mailed to:

  2. Pieces must be no longer than 2 minutes.

  3. Pieces can be solo, duet, or trio, chosen only from following instruments:
    oboe, trumpet (C or Bb), trombone, violin, double bass, piano, percussion (percussion limited to: vibraphone, marimba, xylophone, snare drum, suspended cymbal, and/or triangle)

This event is free and open to the public.


Parking is available in the McKinley Parking Garage (entrance on Ashland Avenue) located immediately south of Sursa Hall. This garage is free on weekends.

  5. Please follow all ushers’ directions regarding entering and exiting performances. Only select seats will be available in Sursa Hall (marked with red dots) and chairs in Hahn Hall will be appropriately distanced. We ask that you please remain seated throughout the performance to ensure that physical distancing is possible at all times.
