Clare Benson
Ancient Cities, Daughters, and Suns

Clare Benson is a photographer and interdisciplinary artist from the northern reaches of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In 2014-15, she received a Fulbright Fellowship to conduct research in Arctic Sweden at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics where she worked alongside scientists and indigenous Sami reindeer herders. Her book, The Shepherd’s Daughter (Photolucida, 2017) received the Critical Mass Book Award. Benson's recent work looks to the landscapes of the western U.S., Canada, and Alaska as it reflects on complex histories in these regions: the illusory dream of the western frontier, rushes for gold, and overhunting as a weapon of colonization.
