Curating Contemporary Asian Art Within Regional and Global Contexts

Chao is senior curator of Asian art at the Crow Museum of Asian art at The University of Texas at Dallas. Her curated exhibitions have presented works ranging from the historical to the contemporary in all medias from emerging and established artists from across the globe. This presentation focuses on current and recently curated contemporary Asian art exhibition projects and programs that have aspired to position works by contemporary artists of Asian descent in expanded art historical, theoretical, and philosophical frameworks, with particular emphasis on expanding the profile of contemporary female artists of Asian descent as well as developing new community collaborations. Some recent projects include: Cultural Ecologies of Asia (2021), Born of Fire: Contemporary Japanese Women Ceramic Artists (2021), Divine Spark: Kana Harada (2021), Beili Liu: One and Another (2020), Invisible Cities: Moving Images Asia (2017).
