A Framework for More Ethical Medical Crowdfunding

Guest speaker: Dr. Alida Liberman

GoFundMe and other crowdfunding sites are an increasingly common way for people to pay their medical bills. But at best, this is a stop-gap measure that only helps some; at worst, it risks entrenching an unsustainable healthcare system that creates the need for crowdfunding in the first place. In this talk, Dr. Liberman outlines some serious moral challenges for medical crowdfunding, and offer strategies that crowdfunding platforms, donors, and fundraisers can take to support individual crowdfunding campaigns in the short-term in a way that is less likely to undermine prospects for long-term reform.

Alida Liberman is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. She received her Ph.D. from USC and taught at the University of Indianapolis for two years before moving to SMU. Her research focuses on theoretical ethics, applied ethics, and the space in between.
