In this presentation, our special guest Dr J Edward Hackett will explain King’s relationship to Boston Personalism, what Boston Personalism is briefly, and King’s specific contribution to personalism. He maintains that four pieces of evidence support this interpretation of King’s philosophy over competing ones. These are, (1) King’s own self-description in his own words from Stride Toward Freedom as a personalist, (2) The homespun personalism of his upbringing, (3) the influence of the choice to attend Boston University and tracking that personalist influence in his writings, and (4) The close connection King maintained with members of the Boston University Personalist tradition, including Walter Muelder, that also reinforced the personalist orientation of his writing, ideas, and activism.
