The 64th Annual Journalism Day
More than 1,000 middle and high school journalists will converge on campus Monday, March 25, 2019, for Journalism Day. The theme of the event is “Retro/Relevant: Journalism then, now and forever!” and will celebrate two milestones: the 50th anniversary of the Department of Journalism and the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Tinker v. Des Moines. The keynote speaker is Mary Beth Tinker, who as an eighth grader defended her First Amendment right to freedom of speech all the way to the Supreme Court in 1969, resulting in the landmark ruling that neither teachers nor students "shed their constitutional rights ... at the schoolhouse gate."
The scholastic journalists begin their day with the keynote at Emens auditorium at 8:30 a.m. and move to the L. A. Pittenger Student Center for a multitude of educational sessions from 10 a.m. - 1:45 p.m.
