A native of Francesville, Indiana, Brett graduated from Ball State in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He completed his Ph.D. studies in the Wolfe group at the University of Michigan, working on the enantioselective synthesis of heterocycles. After graduating in 2015, he became a postdoctoral fellow at Merck Research Labs in Boston, Massachusetts. During his postdoc, he worked on the synthesis and permeability studies of peptidic macrocycles. He joined the discovery chemistry group at Merck Boston in 2017 as a Senior Scientist and spent three years working on immuno-oncology projects. In 2020, he joined the discovery chemistry group at Corteva Agriscience. He is currently a Principal Investigator at Corteva and the project leader of a new insecticide program. His talk will encompass vignettes from his time as a discovery chemist in industry and the challenges facing agrochemical development today.
