For many years, the development of precious metal catalysis has been more prominent compared to the development of catalysis employing base metals for organic transformations. Precious metals are not as readily available and are often mined in countries with unstable political infrastructures, leading to concerns about cost and availability. This brings attention to the ever-growing demand for the development of methods that utilize first-row transition metals as an alternative to precious metals for catalyzing organic transformations. The first portion of my presentation will focus on identifying novel, chiral Ni(0) catalysts to provide enantioselectivity in asymmetric reductive couplings of aldehydes and alkynes. This work expands the use of stable, well-defined NHC-Ni(0) catalysts and identifies new metal-ligand combinations that possess novel structural and reactivity features. The second portion of my presentation will focus on the investigation of multicomponent couplings involving electron-deficient alkenes. This work illustrates the strategy of reaction initiation through metallacycle formation, followed by Mn-mediated introduction of functionality from widely available alkyl halides.
