Toward a CURE in General Chemistry Lab

Dr. Teresa Bixby
Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Lewis University, Romeoville, IL
Research experiences at the undergraduate level have proven to be one of the most effective ways to train scientists and to address the skills gap identified by future employers. However, the barriers to typical research experiences tend to disadvantage underrepresented populations. Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), especially in the first two years of coursework, are proposed to address these inequities by exposing all students to a research experience early in the curriculum. The development and outcomes of a CURE in General Chemistry Lab are described here with a reflection on student outcomes and sustainability.
