WPP393 (Writing Proficiency Course) is junior-level writing course which allows students to demonstrate their writing proficiency according to the criteria established by the Writing Proficiency Program. To attempt the course, you need to have completed the prerequisites:
- ENG 104 or its equivalent
- At least 60 credits toward graduation.
WPP393 is one of two options for students who have not completed WPP392 (Writing Proficiency Exam) after two attempts, but it is open to all eligible students. Therefore, if you have testing anxiety or do not want to attempt WPP392 (Writing Proficiency Exam) or WPP 394 (Writing Proficiency Seminar) for any reason at all, you can take WPP393 instead.
WPP393 is designated a 2-credit course and is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis. The 2 credit hours for WPP393 do count toward graduation, but does not assign quality points—i.e. the course does not impact your Grade Point Average. However, successful completion of the course allows you to satisfy the Writing Proficiency Requirement, which all baccalaureate students at Ball State University must satisfy in order to graduate.
During the academic year, the course runs for 8 weeks and is offered twice each semester, and it runs for one 8-week session in the Summer. On-campus students can sign up for the on-campus sections using SS Banner during the scheduled registration periods; however, the online sections are by permission only and are reserved for students in the Distance education baccalaureate programs.
Only 10 students are able to register for each section, and this small class size allows instructors to give intensive, one-on-one attention to each student in the course.
There are many reasons why students choose to take WPP393 instead of WPP392 (Writing Proficiency Exam) or WPP 394 (Writing Proficiency Seminar); you should consider whether WPP393 might be a better option for you to show your writing proficiency.
