Associate Professor of Telecommunications
Dr. Maria Williams-Hawkins received her Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1994, and has been employed at BSU since 1993. Prior to entering the academy she worked at WREG-TV in Memphis, TN and KMOS-TV in Warrensburg, MO. She formerly owned Video Verification, a corporate media production company. Although she has formerly taught courses in News Writing, Reporting and Photography, Ethics, Media Criticism and International Media, she currently works on topic driven courses that meet community needs such as DVDs on working with international and cross cultural communities, Operating Under the Influence and Alzheimer’s.
She is advisor to NABJ and the Black Graduate Student Alliance and former convener of Kaleidoscope, a conference that introduced students to media anchors and executives from around the region. She teaches a course with Taiwan using the Global Media Network and was the anchor- co-producer of gender and multi-cultural talk shows on WIPB-TV. Dr. Maria, as her students call her, is a minister, a wife and mother and the winner of the university’s first Diversity Advocate Award for 2009 among other recognitions.
