Vanessa Theme Ament

Dr. Ament hails from the film industry in Los Angeles, where she was a Foley artist and sound editor for film and television. Some of the films she has worked on include Die Hard, Platoon, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, Predator, Noises Off, and sex, lies, and videotape. Additionally, she was a voice actor and singer/songwriter. Dr. Ament is the author of The Foley Grail, and has been an invited speaker about film sound at the University of Iowa, University of Pittsburgh, Carleton College, and Savannah College of Art and Design. Ironically, she appeared on Late Night with David Letterman in July 1989.
Dr. Ament received her B.A. in Theatre from Whittier College, an M.Div. from Starr King School—part of the Graduate Theological Union—and her Ph.D. in Moving Image Studies from Georgia State University. Her research interests include cultural studies, sound studies, women in film, and film music.
