Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) is an international honor society that provides service, research, and social opportunities to sociology students. Our chapter (Zeta) was awarded the Emory Bogardus Chapter of the Year (2013-2014) for acknowledging and promoting excellence in scholarship in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, and other social and intellectual activities leading to improvement of the social condition.

Things We Do

AKD allows students to participate in professional and research opportunities, as well as volunteer in the community. AKD also serves as an outlet for undergraduates, graduates, and faculty to build lasting relationships with one another.

Although there are formal membership requirements, all students are welcome to join us as AKD affiliates for our various meetings and events throughout the semester.

Formal AKD membership requirements differ for undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Be an officially declared major or minor in sociology
  • Be at least a junior (63 credits or more)
  • Have accumulated an overall GPA of 3.3
  • Have a 3.0 GPA in sociology courses taken
  • Complete at least four regular courses in sociology prior to initiation
  • Complete one semester of graduate studies in sociology
  • Have a graduate GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Continue in the graduate program beyond initiation

To apply for formal membership in AKD, please complete this form (PDF) and return to NQ 222 along with a $65 check payable to: Ball State University – AKD

This one-time fee of $65 goes to the organization’s national office and covers the cost of honor cords worn during graduation, the initiation certificate you will receive when officially welcomed into the honor society, a one-year subscription to the journal Sociological Inquiry, and lifetime membership in AKD.

Partial scholarships for membership are available for those in need. Please contact Dr. Melinda Messineo for more information.
