Associate Lecturer of Practice and Director of Field Education
Shannon Staton, Lecturer of Practice and Practicum Coordinator
I enjoy teaching Human Behavior in the Social Environment (HBSE)—theory courses, Introduction to Social Work, BSW Senior Practicum, and Field Seminar. I facilitate and oversee practicum placements for 70+ undergraduate students each academic year. I earned my BSW from Ball State University in 2001 and MSW from Indiana University in 2002. I am licensed in the state of Indiana (LSW) since 2003. My practice experience has primarily focused on empowering people with disabilities. I worked as a Behavior Specialist with adults and children with intellectual disabilities and mental health/behavioral challenges for several years. I moved into leadership positions and program development for developmentally delayed children, children diagnosed with autism, and individual and group counseling for adults with disabilities. I have also provided individual, family, and group therapy focusing on mediation and anger management. I currently serve on the Board of Directors for A Better Way—a local agency that provides prevention and crisis services for families experiencing violence. I also serves on the Health Community Solutions Team for United Way of Delaware County.
Some of my interests include culturally competent practice, encouraging students to participate/engage in the community, organizational culture, and wellness.
