Shannon Staton is Director of Field Education and Associate Lecturer of Practice in the department. She enjoys teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses, including Human Behavior in the Social Environment, BSW Senior Practicum, Introduction to Social Work, Diversity, Oppression, & Privilege, MSW Advanced Standing Seminar, Rural Social Work, and MSW Traditional Practicum. Along with the Assistant Director of Field, Adrienne Newman, she facilitates and oversees practicum placements for 70+ undergraduate students and 25+ graduate students each academic year. Shannon earned her BSW from Ball State University in 2001 and her MSW from Indiana University in 2002. She has been licensed in the state of Indiana as an LSW since 2003. Shannon’s field experience has primarily focused on empowering people with disabilities. She worked as a Behavior Specialist with adults and children with intellectual disabilities and mental health/behavioral challenges for several years, before moving on to administration and program development in the area of developmentally delayed children, children diagnosed with autism, and affordable group and individual counseling for adults with disabilities. Shannon also has work experience providing individual, family, and group therapy with a focus on mediation and anger management. She has enjoyed service and volunteer opportunities on behalf of A Better Way, a local agency that provides prevention and crisis services for families experiencing violence. Some of her interests include culturally competent practice, encouraging students to participate/engage in the community, organizational culture, and wellness.
