Equip yourself with the confidence, connections and expertise to tell stories that matter for news outlets, magazines, businesses and nonprofits around the world.
The magazine media concentration of our bachelor’s degree in journalism starts in the classroom, where you gain foundational knowledge in writing, ethics and editing. Then, award-winning faculty challenge you to apply that know-how to tell stories that matter for publications and community partners including our own Ball Bearings Magazine.
You’ll engage in all forms of journalistic writing, including hard news, features, travel writing, personal essays, entertainment and trend stories, opinion writing and personality profiles.
The magazine concentration incorporates photography, videography, design-thinking and social media into its rigorous coursework, which prepares you to lead in an exciting career that pushes innovation and entrepreneurial learning.
Our curriculum incorporates empathy and self-awareness to help you recognize bias and stay grounded in ethics throughout your career. It prepares you to be a critical thinker and collaborator, a leader with digital proficiency and an agile communications professional.
Students tell us they arrive on campus and find more than an academic home; they find a sense of belonging and purpose among peers, career-focused experiences, and welcoming faculty who support them long after graduation.
My experience with Ball Bearings helped tremendously in job interviews post-grad. Interviewers were super impressed with me having a physical example of my work. My current boss at Mashable actually offered me a job on the spot because she was blown away by how much experience I was able to gain in college. In the day-to-day, I use interviewing and reporting skills that I learned in my classes and student media at Ball State.
