Tell great stories across multiple platforms, develop high-level research and data skills, and participate in immersive learning with our signature boots-on-the-ground reporting experience in the news concentration of our bachelor’s degree in journalism.
Match Point: The rise of men's volleyball and Unmasked: The stigma of meth are examples of our students writing and editing stories, producing magazines, and creating documentaries. These experiences, and others, allow you to work in real-life settings, often in collaboration with community partners.
Our alumni work for the highest caliber journalism organizations across the country including The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, VOX Media, Telemundo, and Time magazine. They also work at local news organizations.
Our state-of-the-art space, the Unified Media Lab, is an 8,000 square-foot facility that includes newsrooms for our student media organizations, classroom space, a digital news desk, and a wide variety of student-run media opportunities including the Daily News.
Our faculty teach empathy and self-awareness, not only for recognizing personal biases but also for helping students to stay grounded in professional ethics throughout their careers. Students tell us they arrive on campus and find more than an academic home; they find a sense of belonging as they participate in transformational experiences that launch them on a career path serving the public’s need for ethical, fact-based news and information.
I would not be who I am today if it were not for the people I have met at Ball State University. Everyone I have interacted with has been so genuinely interested in helping me grow as a journalist and as a person, and I am so thankful for the lasting relationships and connections that I have been able to make. I now have a portfolio that I am proud of and am confident that regardless of what I decide to do after I graduate — whether it be graduate school or working at a paper — I will be able to easily find opportunities that interest me.
