Before You Apply: Recommended Next Steps

Before you begin your application, we recommend you learn more about Ball State, review our admission process and requirements, and gather your required materials.

Step 1: Get to Know Ball State

Learn about Ball State, our Graduate School, and your program of interest.

Step 2: Review Our Admission Process

Some admission requirements differ between types of applicants. Be sure to follow the process that aligns with your current situation.

Prior to starting the application process, all prospective students need to review the School of Nursing Information Packet for the semester/year they intend to apply to the program. Each packet contains information related to the cost of the program, clinicals, time commitments, on campus requirement, sample plans of study, and list of supplemental application materials required by the School of Nursing.

Ball State is authorized to accept online students from all U.S. states. However, certain states have regulations and/or additional requirements regarding licensing programs in behavior analysis, nursing, and education.

Learn more.

If you were previously enrolled at Ball State but have not taken classes for more than a year—or if you received a "Re-Admit" error when attempting to register for classes—you need to select the “Re-enroll (previous Ball State graduate students only)” option under “Academic Intent” in your application.

Do not choose the Re-enroll Applicant Type if you are any of the following:

  • a first-time applicant to a Ball State graduate program;
  • applying for a new or different program or certificate than one in which you are already enrolled; OR
  • previously applied for a program but never attended any classes.

The following requirements are for applicants applying to Spring 2023 or Fall 2023.

Step 3: Verify Your Admission Requirements

Make sure you meet the following requirements to apply to your program:

  • reside in and complete all clinical hours in the state of Indiana or Ohio
  • be a graduate of a NLN CNEA - NLNAC, ACEN, NLN CNEA, or CCNE accredited master’s program in nursing
  • have a minimum overall 3.0 graduate GPA on a 4.0 scale
    • Competitive applicants will hold a 3.0 GPA or higher in all of their nursing programs.
    • Graduates of programs that only offer pass/fail grades may not be competitive applicants.
  • have an active, unencumbered Indiana or Ohio RN license
  • GRE is not required

Step 4: Gather Your Application Materials

In addition to your application, you will be requested to upload the following materials to your application portal:

  • Transcripts showing complete academic record. While official transcripts are not required to apply to the Post-Master’s Certificate (PMC) in Nursing Program, students admitted into the program are required to provide official proof showing successful completion of all graduate nursing degrees/certificates held (master's, post-master’s certificate, doctoral), via an official transcript(s), prior to starting the program. What is this?
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Supplemental application form.
    • You will need to complete the supplemental form as part of your online application. You can access supplemental form(s) within your Applicant Status Portal.

Submit all required documents by the application deadline, including an application, transcripts, and all supplemental materials required by the School of Nursing. Please refer to the Information Packet for a list of the supplemental materials required by the School of Nursing.

Step 5: Review Department Specific Information

  • Applications are only good for one semester.
  • Submitting an application does not guarantee admission into the program.
  • Meeting or exceeding the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission into the program.
  • The Post-Master’s Certificate Program is only offered online. We do not offer an on-campus option.
  • Campus visits may be required when enrolled in certain NP clinical courses.
  • Admitted students must successfully complete all required health clearance requirements, including a background check, drug screen, and other requirements for clinical practice.
  • Admitted students are also required to attend a one-day, on-campus orientation. Please refer to the Information Packet for the orientation date that corresponds with your desired term of admission.
