James Thompson joined the faculty of Ball State University in the fall of 2019 as an instructor of music and has since taught courses such as Introduction to Music, History of Rock and Roll in America, Music History I, and Music Theory I & III.

In addition to teaching, Dr. Thompson enjoys an active career as a flutist. He has been named a winner of the National Flute Association’s Graduate Research and Masterclass competitions; and has appeared as a concerto soloist with the New Chicago Chamber Orchestra, the Southern Illinois Symphony, the Ball State University Symphony Orchestra, and the Illinois State University Symphony Orchestra. He has performed at numerous National Flute Association conventions and the College Music Society National Conference. During the summers, Dr. Thompson has appeared music festivals such as Domaine Forget (Canada), Festival Suoni d’Abruzzo (Italy), the Fresno Opera & Orchestra Summer Academy, and the Southern Illinois Music Festival.

Dr. Thompson currently holds the 3rd Flute & Piccolo chair with Symphony of the Lakes and is a regular performer in Orchestra Indiana, the Anderson Symphony, the Kokomo Symphony, and other regional orchestras. He also serves as instructor of flute at Earlham College and Education Coordinator for Orchestra Indiana.

Originally hailing from Missouri, Dr. Thompson received a Bachelor of Music Performance from Truman State University, a Master of Music from Illinois State University, and a Doctor of Arts in Music from Ball State University.
