German or another foreign language broadens one’s horizon. Whoever wants to really understand other cultures has to learn the language. Language is the gate to cultural understanding.
Professor Jutta Vogelbacher joined the MLC department in 2012 and teaches German 101,102, 201, 202, and often 301. She particularly enjoys the beginning German courses, because she likes seeing students grow into being able to engage in small dialogues. Keeping it conversational in most situations is Professor Vogelbacher’s primary goal in teaching those particular courses. The emphasis in the intermediate courses becomes more focused on a certain geographical location, like cities, and therefore regional trends and cultural trademarks. She uses current videos by German news media on news, culture topics, and traditions. In German 201 Professor Vogelbacher stresses the importance of German film by showing many short trailers in order to encourage students to watch foreign films and uses them as a tool in their efforts to understand the language, as well as the culture of German speaking countries.
