To celebrate four years of hard work, each Miller Business Honors Program senior class embarks on a capstone group excursion. The experience blends a rigorous, hands-on learning with professional networking and social events.
The Capstone Experience
Honors students—regardless of major—are required to complete a capstone that builds upon traditional curriculum to give students a competitive edge. Similarly, all senior business majors are required to take capstone, Business Decision-Making and Strategic Management (MGT 491).
Our business honors students get the best of both worlds—engaging in a robust, unique capstone experience that integrates MGT 491 within a custom Disney Institute, the professional development branch of The Walt Disney Company used to train, develop, and share best practices with business and their executive leaders, many from Fortune 500 companies. With social activities peppered throughout the trip, the capstone also serves as an end-of-program/graduation celebration.
An exclusive trip
The Miller Business Honors Program is one of just a few undergraduate programs in the country to employ the expertise of Disney Institute. Each fall, preparations begin. Faculty and staff work with Disney Institute facilitators and content development specialists to create a unique learning experience for our seniors while they prepare by studying The Walt Disney Company’s history, business decisions, and corporate culture.
That spring, senior business honors students enrolled in MGT 491 travel to the Walt Disney World Resort® in Orlando, Florida, for the multi-day learning experience, which includes:
- participation in full-day Disney Institute facilitated workshops, seminars, speakers, and examination of implementation of in-park business practices
- analysis of on-site, third-party companies
- observation of corporate culture
- examination of on-site business decisions and comparison/contrast with local, known businesses
- MGT 491 integration debriefing
- reflection of Disney practices in application to individual student career experiences, goals, and industry-specific functional areas
- celebrations at an evening reception
- optional additional student-funded day of freedom
The Disney Institute on-site facilitators are Disney veterans who are accomplished business leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, and executives who use dynamic stories and demonstrations to explain effective business models and concepts.
Upon return to the university, students complete a faculty-directed individual and/or group project to reflect and build upon the immersive experience.
The Senior Experience is the only component of the Honors Program with a nominal fee.
“What better way to celebrate four years of hard work than at Disney, but in addition to fun days at the park, we dove into the company’s distinction through hands-on case studies and activities pertaining to multiple situational analyses and corporate decision-making. It was rewarding and insightful to learn and work alongside students of all majors as we prepare for our careers.”
