Before joining Ball State University, Gary worked for many years as a professional actuary at American States Insurance and later at SAFECO. He also managed the development of the Commercial Lines predictive modeling unit at Travelers Insurance in Hartford, CT.
Gary has been an active contributor to the professional actuarial community through the Casualty Actuarial Society. His noteworthy contributions include Chair of the Examination Committee, first Editor-in-Chief for Variance: Advancing the Science of Risk, membership on the Board of Directors, and member of the Executive Council. He was a 2014 recipient of the Matthew Rodermund Memorial Service Award for lifetime service to the actuarial profession.
