About Juli Metzger


Juli Metzger is an Associate Lecturer and 2020 Fellow at the Virginia B. Ball Center for Creative Inquiry at Ball State University. She teaches courses ranging from the Introduction to Storytelling to Feature Writing, Opinion Writing and Entrepreneurial Media, as well as a departmental capstone course, Advanced Writing and Reporting. Over a 30-year career as a journalist, she was editor of three newspapers and president and publisher of three others. She worked in nine newsrooms in four states and is a former Editor of the Year for the Gannett Company, and Executive Editor for Digital at the Indianapolis Star. She served on the national Associated Press Media Editors Board of Directors until 2019.


She's been a Fellow in the Entrepreneurial Institute at Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. In 2017, Metzger was awarded Ball State’s Immersive Learning Faculty Award for her work with students on "Unmasked: The Stigma of meth," a multimedia, multiplatform immersion class examining drug addiction. Metzger also has 15 years of experience in strategic communications, first as President and Publisher of three media companies, then as a Group Director in Gannett, working with advertising and marketing departments across the country to improve messaging and bottom lines. She is the principal owner of The JMetzger Group, a boutique public relations and strategic communications agency. Metzger is board vice president of Project Leadership whose mission is to move students to and through college or another post-secondary experience. She also serves on the board of the Indiana Youth Institute. In 2020, she received the Vivian Conley award for humanitarian achievement and was presented the Ball State University faculty award for Social Justice by the College of Communication, Information and Media.
