Student presenting on Freedom Bus

This concentration is one of four in our bachelor’s degree in communication studies program.

Quick Facts

Ideas and convictions matter. Advocacy requires a deep understanding of the audience to persuade people and steer groups toward action. Advocacy and Public Communication considers how messages are constructed (and by whom), which meanings are privileged and excluded, and to what effects.

Responsible advocates challenge ideas that perpetuate inequality and advance causes they care deeply about. You’ll analyze, critique, and craft messages that influence society and promote ethical societal change.

Students in this major tend to be passionate, engaged, and fearless when it comes to standing up for what they believe in. They might describe themselves as critics, persuaders, or activists.

Possible job titles include: Campaign Manager, Victims Advocate, Grant Writer, Diversity Officer, Lobbyist
